Joanne Ulene

Somewhere between the first note and the last, every choir has a spark — a little flicker of unpredictability that keeps things interesting. For us, that spark is Joanne Ulene.

Joanne lives in the alto section, the hidden framework of the music where the melody steps aside and something richer takes shape. Altos are the quiet builders. They thread the harmonies together, hold everything steady, and count with laser focus. It’s not the easy path — it’s the essential one.

And Joanne steps right into it.

She approaches her music like a puzzle waiting to be solved, listening closely, turning pieces over in her mind until everything clicks into place. There is something quietly remarkable about that kind of effort — no shortcuts, no coasting, just a willingness to keep working until it feels right.

If you’ve ever watched Christina Applegate meet life with honesty, humor, and undeniable strength, you’ll recognize that same spirit in Joanne. It’s a steady, unshakable kind of grit — the kind that doesn’t announce itself, but shows up anyway and gets the job done.

And then there’s her sparkle.

Joanne brings a charmingly quirky light that brightens every rehearsal. She keeps things from getting too serious, too heavy, too stuck. She laughs, she learns, and she keeps going — and somehow, everyone around her feels a little lighter because of it.

A proud graduate of the University of Southern California, Joanne has been married to Rob for over 30 years — a man she swears she doesn’t deserve, which tells you everything you need to know about her. Together, they’ve raised two wonderful sons, Trenton (22) and Austin (20), who no doubt have inherited her warmth, humor, and unmistakable spark.

Joanne, thank you for continuing to show up and shine every time you step on stage. Your fun, irreverent spirit and steady heart make you a truly essential part of the Choraleers.
